Invitation: online iLab meeting: Thursday 18 February 16:00-17:00

Klaas Wardenaar: Power analysis for multilevel ESM studies

We would like to invite you all to the upcoming iLab meeting, which will be held digitally. The link for this meeting will be sent around about a week before the meeting. So, save the time already in your agenda.

Diary studies are increasingly being used in psychiatry, but designing a diary study remains a challenge. This is also true for determining the optimal sample size: how many persons do and how many assessments per person do we need to test our hypotheses with sufficient power in multilevel analysis? Due to the complexity of the design and analyses there are no simple formulas or rules of thumb for this situation. In this presentation I will first explain the reasons for this. after that, I will show how changes in the number of persons and the number of assessments per person affect the power of multilevel diary studies. Finally, I will show some examples of simulation methods to illustrate how sample size can be properly estimated a priori.

Invitation to the inspiration and information meeting ‘innovative markers – iLab-module’ – Monday 25 January – 9:00 – 10:30

We are pleased to invite you to an inspirational and informational meeting about the – to be developed – iLab-module at the University Center of Psychiatry. With the iLab-module project, we aim to find and test the utility of transdiagnostic predictors of psychiatric course and treatment outcome. This might enable personalized diagnosis and treatment.
If you click here, you will find a flyer (in Dutch) about this project.

What can you expect?
After a short introduction of the ‘innovative markers component’ of the iLab-module project, four researchers will propose and present very interesting ideas for innovative markers to be included in the iLab-module. You will hear more about automated speech analysiselectrophysiological biomarkerspassive smartphone tracking and virtual reality.

After the presentations, there is enough time for general questions about and suggestions for the iLab-module, which is still in the early stages. If you have your own idea for an innovative marker, we would love to hear that as well.

Symposium "Small is beautiful {again}"

Online: 14, 15 and 16 April 2021

Single-Case Experimental Design (SCED) research has exponentially increased in recent years. Clinicians and researchers alike are benefiting from SCED’s flexibility and potential for innovative and robust findings. The result of such staggering interest has culminated in the current symposium, which strives to bring together experts and novices in this growing field of research. We aim to continue expanding awareness, knowledge, and expertise of this increasingly prominent research methodology.

This symposium is a joint venture between KU Leuven (Belgium) and Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), and takes place 14, 15, and 16 April 2021. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Work groups
The iLab initiated several work groups to increase and share knowledge. If you are interested to join a work group, or if you think you have interesting information for a specific work group, you can send an e-mail to the members of the work group.

Work groups:
1. Preprocessing of diary data: To gain knowledge about possible ways to preprocess data and to create a work instruction tree about how to preprocess your diary data.
Harriëtte Riese, Sanne Booij and Laura Bringmann
2. iLab knowledge repository: to create a document with up to date information (literature, scripts etc) concerning diary studies and intensive longitudinal data analysis. Klaas wardenaar and Marij Zuidersma
3. Actigraphy: to get the most up to date knowledge about actigraphy: Harriëtte Riese, Sandip George, Yoram Kunkels, Olga Minaeva, Sanne Booij, Marij Zuidersma
4. Sleep assessment in clinical practice: to gain knowledge about current potentials for sleep assessment in clinical practice (integrating it in the iLab module) and its use for scientific research in patients. Sanne Booij, Harriëtte Riese,  Stella Druiven, Richard Oude Voshaar, Marij Zuidersma.

An evaluation of the efficacy of two add-on ecological momentary intervention modules for depression in a pragmatic randomized controlled trial (ZELF-i)

There has been limited research on the efficacy of ecological momentary interventions (EMI). This RCT is the first to examine the effects of – two different – EMI modules as an add-on to regular depression treatment. We report the impact on depressive symptomatology (primary outcome), as well as social functioning and feelings of empowerment.

Temporal dynamics of depression, cognitive performance and sleep in older persons with depressive symptoms and cognitive impairments: a series of eight single-subject studies
I am proud to present that the paper presenting the main results of the idiographic study on Cognition, Affect and Sleep in the Elderly (i-CASE) has recently been accepted. In this study, we assessed sleep, depression and cognitive function  on a daily basis for 63 consecutive days in 8 older persons. With vector autoregressive modeling (VAR), we found different temporal associations for different patients, suggesting that different patients may benefit from a different therapeutic approach. This knowledge can help with the development of personalized intervention strategies in order to maintain patients' health, quality of life, functional outcomes and independence.
